Joseph Owens
Senior Partner and Traffic Law Attorney
First as an enlisted Soldier, Officer, and Judge Advocate in the U.S. Army. Both in and out of uniform, Joseph Owens has demonstrated the innocence of hundreds of service members throughout the world.
After leaving active duty as Infantryman, he went to Law School. He then began his legal career as a judicial clerk in the Circuit Court for the State of Maryland; followed by a staff attorney position with the Veterans Administration, where he became renowned for fighting for the rights of Veterans. He then entered the Army's Judge Advocate General's Corps.
Following ten years of active duty, he became a faculty member at the University of Columbia School of Law’s working in their chapter of the Innocence Project Clinic. Joe has first-hand knowledge of the Veterans Affairs system. After suffering a traumatic amputation of his left leg in 2015, Joe had to face not only months and months of healing, but also learn to navigate a complicated, circuitous and often confusing VA system. He fully understands what service members face when they try to get help from the VA.
Never one to let even the most adverse of circumstances keep him down, he vowed the accident would not take away his ability to run, and while still in the hospital, announced that someday he would run the Boston Marathon, a goal he accomplished in Spring 2018.
As a dedicated tri-athlete, he knows the value of persistence and hard work. He started out slowly after the accident, with 5k races, 10k races, and then the Army 10-miler in 2016. Even then, races were not enough, so he started doing Olympic-level triathlons throughout the Country.
Joe's persistence shows in his legal work. Joe's disdain for the inaccurate and incomplete testimony of law enforcement officials has resulted in acquittals in every branch of the Military. His overcoming of false confessions has been described as legendary; as a Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner, he typically understands sexual assault cases better than the Government; in fact, prosecutors for the Government in one high attention case described his presence on a case as unfair to the Government! No matter the case, Joe is the attorney who will fight for you!
